National champions crowned at Scottish Open Padel Championships
National champions were crowned after three days of top-class action at the Scottish Open Padel Championships, hosted by Tennis Scotland for the first time.
The Grade One LTA Padel British Tour event was live on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website, and players from Scotland, Great Britain and beyond didn’t disappoint during a highly entertaining event.
In the men’s competition, Spanish seventh seeds Josep Aymerich & Rafael Vega took the title following a hard-fought final with home favourites Sam Macneil & Nicholas Hatchett.
Ainhoa Rico & Rosie Pooley were champions in the women’s event after a stunning show on Finals Day, winning both their matches without dropping a single game.
Held in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the terrific Racket Barn padel venue in Glasgow, Finals Day opened with the men’s semi-final with Scottish pair Macneil & Hatchett finding their form in front of the cameras as they dispatched Zyaan Ahmed & Imran Aswat 6-1, 6-4.
That set up a final with Aymerich & Vega after they beat Richard Brooks & 17-year-old Ben Phillips 6-2, 6-4.
Top seeds Lucy Jones & Abigail Ombler-Truran came through their televised semi-final 6-3, 6-0 over Racket Barn duo Helena Britt & Evia Squires to win through to a meeting with Rico & Pooley, after they defeated Kerry Langworthy & Tara Spiers 6-0, 6-0.
Next up came the finals with Aymerich & Vega beating Macneil & Hatchett 6-3, 6-3, before Rico and Pooley beat Jones & Ombler-Truran 6-0, 6-0 to get their hands on the title.
