Daniella Britton wins Lexus Wrexham Open One Point Grand

• 1 minute read

Junior tennis star Daniella Britton has been crowned champion of the inaugural One Point Grand at the Lexus Wrexham Open, winning the innovative one-point knockout competition format that sees amateurs take on professional players.

The One Point Grand is inspired by the Australian Open’s hugely popular One Point Slam where each round consists of just one point.

The amateurs receive two serves while the professionals only have one. A coin toss decided which player had the choice as to whether they would serve or receive. The winner of each round progresses through the draw until there are just two players remaining and one point decides the champion.

Britton’s victory earned her the prize of £1,000 and a place in the Australian Open’s One Point Slam in 2027.

She said afterwards: “I did not expect to win at all; I just hoped to get through the first or second round. It’s a lot different to what we’re used to in normal matches, and there were definitely a lot of pros, including me, feeling the pressure. It was a great experience and I’m looking forward to doing it again.”

Played in front of a supportive crowd at the Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre on Monday evening, 24 local amateur players took to the court for a qualifying round, with 12 winners making it through to take on the pros where they were also joined by wild card entrants that included The Tennis Podcasts’ Matt Roberts and Wrexham AFC CEO Michael Williamson.

A number of amateur players did advance to the later stages of the tournament, taking points against the pros, with Andy Cree from Wrexham the most successful amateur, making it to the quarter-final stage.

The Lexus Wrexham Open main draw starts today with five British players included in a high-quality field – Alicia Dudeney, off the back of her 6th World Tennis Tour title of 2026 at W35 Edgbaston, and four wild cards Jodie Burrage, Amelia Rajecki, Britton and Hannah Klugman.
