Day two: Great Britain punch their ticket to the Final 8

Great Britain have secured their place in the Davis Cup Final 8 for the first time since since 2023 after securing a confident victory over Ecuador.

Day one wins from debutant Toby Samuel, who came back from a set down to defeat Andres Andrade, and Wimbledon semi-finalist Arthur Fery who sprinted to a straight sets win over Alvaro Guillen Meza  gave the Brits a 2-0 lead heading into Sunday.

Then it was over to the doubles world No.1 and No.3 Henry Patten and Neal Skupski who came through a tight match against Gonzalo Escobar and Diego Hidalgo to secure the win for GB and book a ticket to November’s Finals in Bologna.

Harry Wendelken made it a clean sweep of victories for Leon Smith's side, as the 24-year-old sealed his Davis Cup debut with a victory over Angel Veliz.

Match one: Samuel secures dream debut

World No.95 Samuel came through a testing match against the Ecuador No.1 to seal a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win in an hour and 46 minutes. 

“This is a big dream of mine", Samuel reflected after his win. "You could sort of tell because I was quite nervous at the start but I got myself going and got the job done for Great Britain."

Stepping onto court for the first time at the Davis Cup, there were naturally some early nerves for the British debutant and his opponent took full advantage - storming into a 4-0 lead inside 15 minutes. 

A double fault from the world No.203 helped Samuel recover one of the breaks, but he couldn’t find a second as Andrade sealed the opener when the Brit steered a backhand volley into the net.

Roared on by the home crowd, Samuel responded well in the second. After holding comfortably, he converted one of two break points to edge ahead for the first time in the match.

Although Andrade fought back to level terms, the 24-year-old struck at the ideal moment. A pinpoint forehand that dropped inside the baseline earned Samuel a set point at 5-4 before another costly double fault from the Ecuadorian sent the match into a decider.

From there, the momentum swung firmly with the British No.4. Back-to-back breaks to love catapulted him into a 5-1 lead and set him up with the chance to serve for victory on home soil.

After recovering from 0-40 down, the Briton fired a first serve down the T that Andrade could only send wide to complete a winning Davis Cup debut on his second match point.

Match two: Fery closes out day one with a win

British No.1 Fery produced a sensational performance against Guillen Meza, battling through a tense opening set before powering to a 7-5, 6-0 victory in an hour and 30 minutes. 

“It feels unbelievable”, Fery beamed in his on-court interview. “To play in front of everyone here in London in only my second Davis Cup tie - we’re used to travelling alone all year, so to be here as part of a team and in front of you guys is unbelievable.”

There was little to separate the Brit and the Ecuadorian through the opening exchanges and despite Fery earning three break points, he couldn’t find a way past the world No.293. 

However, the Brit's patience soon paid off at 6-5 when an impressive return game earned the 24-year-old a fourth break point which he grabbed with both hands - drawing the error off the Ecuadorian’s backhand to clinch the set and bring the home crowd to its feet.

Like compatriot Samuel in the previous rubber, once Fery had the opening set in hand there was simply no stopping him.

The world No.36 dropped just six points behind serve in the second set and won 11 of 14 points on return as he reeled off six consecutive games - sealing victory when Guillen Meza struck his third double fault of the match.

Match three: Patten and Skupski team up to seal victory

Patten and Skupski saw out a comfortable victory for Great Britain after beating Gonzalo Escobar and Diego Hidalgo 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 25 minutes.

Teaming up together for just the second time on the Davis Cup stage, the dream doubles duo made a red-hot start - breaking in their opening return game thanks to a lob winner from Skupski to open a 3-0 lead. 

The Ecuadorian pair stayed within touching distance, but the British duo proved difficult to break down on serve, eventually closing out the opening set with a clinical love hold as Patten put away a smash.

The pair picked up where they left off in the second set, breezing through their service games and dominating behind their first serve, where they won 96% of points across the match (30/32).

Patten and Skupski were equally impressive on return and raised their level in the high-pressure moments. The Brits earned a break point at 4-4 and seized their opportunity, with Skupski crushing a forehand winner down the line off a second serve to put Great Britain on the brink of victory.

Then it was over to three-time Grand Slam champion Patten to serve out the win, with newly crowned US Open champion Skupski putting away a no-look backhand volley to fire Great Britain into the Final 8.

Match four: Wendelken wins on debut

Wendelken added to the success after beating Angel Veliz 6-2, 6-3 on his Davis Cup debut.

The rising British star has enjoyed a standout year so far, highlighted by making his main draw debut as a wild card at Wimbledon and coming through qualifying to reach the US Open main draw last month. Now, he adds a maiden Davis Cup appearance to his fast-expanding list of achievements this year - becoming LTA Colour Holder No.336.

Although the Brits had already secured the tie against Ecuador, Wendelken came out swinging freely in the final match of the day at the Copper Box Arena.

A fast start led the 24-year-old to race 3-0 ahead and although Veliz recovered one of the breaks, it wasn’t long before Wendelken reinstated the double break lead to see out the set.

The world No.175 carried that momentum into the second, applying the pressure onto his 18-year-old opponent and was rewarded with another break in the third game as he forced the error out of Veliz.

From then on out, he was rock solid on serve - losing just two points throughout the second set before a double fault from the young Ecuadorian secured Wendelken his first career win for the Lexus GB team.
