Billie Jean King Cup 2026: Great Britain exit to Czechia in quarter-finals

The Lexus Great Britain team have bowed out of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals after losing to a star-studded Czech team 2-0 in the quarter-finals.
11-time champions Czechia had the edge in what was a close battle between the two nations, with world No.26 Maria Bouzkova and world No.6 Linda Noskova beating Sonay Kartal and Katie Boulter to guide their nation to the final four in Shenzhen.
Playing her first match since reaching the fourth round at Indian Wells in March, Kartal made an impressive return to action but narrowly lost out to Bouzkova 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-4 in three hours.
Boulter then faced a stern challenge in the form of Wimbledon champion Noskova, with the Czech closing out the tie with a 6-2, 7-6(3) win.
Great Britain leave the Billie Jean King Cup having reached the Finals for the fourth time in five years.
Czechia will now move on to the semi-finals for the first time since 2023.

Following the loss, Lexus GB Team Captain Anne Keothavong said, "It was always going to be a tough challenge against the Czechs.
"For both these players (Sonay and Katie) it required their absolute best and a bit of luck for the result to go our way. I can't fault their efforts. I think the Czechs are the strongest team here. I'd be surprised if they don't go on to win this competition."
Despite having six months away from the match court, Kartal put up a valiant effort against Lexus Nottingham Open champion Bouzkova.
The 24-year-old recovered well from losing the opener against the world No.26 - breaking in the opening service game of the second and holding firm to force a decider.
Bouzkova looked on her way to running away with the match when she opened up a 5-2 lead before Kartal struck back when the 28-year-old served for the match.
However, the Czech star dealt one final blow - breaking the Brit for a fourth time to give her nation a 1-0 advantage in the quarter-final tie.
"For our captain to trust me to bring the level that I tried to find today, I think I wasn't too far off, it means a lot," Kartal said after her match.
"Regardless of how long I've spent off the court, I can look back at that performance and be happy. I know I had my chances, but I'm leaving here and leaving the court knowing that I put everything I had on the match court.
"I think it gives me a lot of confidence going forwards for the rest of the Asian Swing, knowing the first match back, that was the level I produced. I was pretty happy with it."
It was a similar story for British No.1 Boulter, who pushed Grand Slam champion and world No.6 Noskova in the second singles rubber.
Boulter came into the tie boasting a 14-7 win record in Billie Jean King Cup matches but was immediately pinned back by the Czech, who raced through the opening set thanks to an early double break.
The Briton raised her level in the second set and became more of a threat in the rallies, but the 21-year-old Czech star continued to serve her way out of trouble - winning 78% of points behind her first serve (36/46) and firing 15 aces across the match.
Boulter managed to force a tie-break but couldn't find the level needed to take the match to a deciding set, as Noskova found the double mini-break to seal victory for Czechia.
While the Brits would’ve been disappointed to have not matched last year's semi-final run, there are plenty of positives to take away from their 2026 Billie Jean King Cup campaign - including their upset win over Australia in the April Qualifiers.
Great Britain will return to the Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers in 2027 for the chance to make the Finals once again.
